A Brewery at the Edge of Town

💸 ~3000 CRC (~3 USD) 📍 Liberia ⏱ relaxed ★★★☆☆ ✓ personally verified

Liberia is a concrete town baking in the April heat. There is not much to do. But a short ride from the centre, a small brewery hides behind a turn off a busy road — and it is exactly the kind of place you come to Costa Rica hoping to find.

Liberia

Liberia is a small city close to the airport. There is not much going on. It is reasonably safe — at least during the day you can walk around on your own without worry. In April, when the heat peaks, the whole city bakes and walking the streets is not particularly pleasant.

We spent one night there and visited the local brewery and pub, Maderos Brewery. It sits just outside the city centre. An Uber will take you there for a few dollars.

Getting There

When you arrive, do not be confused by the stop on the busy main road. Once the car turns off, you will see a small pub with a stage and outdoor seating. It had a slight Texas feel to it — open air, relaxed, unpretentious.

The Beer

They always have several beers on tap. Craft, local, rotating. After an afternoon in Liberia's concrete heat, a cold glass here hits differently.

Food

They have a few things to eat. Nothing special — I had a hotdog with fries. It does the job.

Why Come Here

If you want to escape the concrete jungle of Liberia, this is the place to go. It is not in a guidebook. It does not need to be. You just need to know the turn.

Tip: Take an Uber from the city centre — a few dollars each way. Do not get out on the main road, wait for the driver to turn off.
